Resurrection

by Daniel Beaty
Music by Daniel Bernard Roumain
Directed by Oz Scott

Thur. Oct. 23rd at 11:00am

Wed. Oct. 29th at 11:00am
Open

Plot Synopsis: Six black men: from Eric, a 10 year old child scientist, to The Bishop, the leader of a mega church, to his son Isaac, a corporate executive struggling with his sexual identity-experience an unexpected phenomenon on the same evening, changing their lives forever.

From the playwright:

As an artist I am interested in how we transform pain into power. The story of black men in America is one that is historically and presently too often one of challenge and difficulty from the experience of slavery to the current statistics about black men. The Urban League's 2007 Report, Portrait of the Black Male, states that one in three black boys born in 2010 will spend time in prison. Resurrection is my effort to look at this crisis with thoughtfulness, heart, and humor. Yes, humor because I believe laughter enables us to see what might otherwise be unbearable. The intent of this work is to remind us all through the lens of the black male experience that no matter the difficulties we may be facing, there is always hope and the possibility to overcome. Moreover, this overcoming, this Resurrection is crucial for our children.

Daniel Beaty is Hartford Stage's 2007-08 Aetna American Voices Playwright in Residence

Themes: identity, addiction, faith and redemption.

Content Considerations: Mature content, story is powerful, fast-moving, and easy to follow. Some adult language. Frank discussion of sexuality, drugs, racism, food/obesity, HIV/AIDS-described but not shown on stage. Some religious imagery.
