February 4, 2008/Hartford, CT . . . Zerline's Tale, the hit drama currently receiving its American premiere at Hartford Stage, has been chosen by The Theatre on Film and Tape Archive of the New York Public Library for Performing Arts at Lincoln Center for inclusion in its permanent collection. The production is directed by Hartford Stage Artistic Director Michael Wilson and stars Tony Award-winning theatre legend Elizabeth Ashley. The Archive has preserved nearly 20 Hartford Stage productions and most recently recorded Mr. Wilson's production of Tennessee Williams' A Lovely Sunday for Creve Coeur in 2006.
In the play, Zerline (Ashley) is a maid in an aristocratic household who recounts her captivating story of lust, pleasure, and disappointment as she metes out her own justice against the "empty wickedness" of her betters. The Hartford Courant raves, "Ashley is superb," and Variety hails her "transformative performance," enthusing, "Ashley works the room in every sense of the word." Production support for Zerline's Tale is provided by the National Endowment for the Arts. Additional support is provided by the Greater Hartford Arts Council and the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism.
The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts houses the world's most extensive combination of circulating and non-circulating reference and research materials on music, dance, theatre, recorded sound, and other performing arts.
Zerline's Tale runs at Hartford Stage through February 10. Tickets and more information are available by calling 860-527-5151 or visiting www.hartfordstage.org. Hartford Stage is located at 50 Church Street in Hartford with parking located in the MAT Garage, directly adjacent to the theatre. The theatre is easily accessible from I-84 and I-91.
